My Christmas presents were stolen out of my car! Does my car insurance cover this?

No… I’m afraid it does not, and here’s why……. The cost for your automobile insurance is based upon a number of things. In other words, you pay a premium based upon several areas of coverage… Liability, First Party Benefits (Medical, Wage Loss, Accidental Death), Uninsured and Underinsured Motorists, and lastly Comprehensive and Collision. None of these coverages provides for…. perhaps $1,000’s of dollars of personal property you just purchased for Christmas. Consider this example…. You just purchased jewelry for your significant other at a cost of $2,500, and left it in the car while you made another stop. You came out to find your window broken and the package taken….. how would the insurance company ever collect a premium for the “exposure” of “personal property” stolen from your car?

So what do you do????? Can this loss be covered??? Certainly, your Homeowners or Renters policy provides coverage for your personal property anywhere in the world! Call your local independent insurance agency and discuss the loss with them. You’ll have to file a police report and probably pay your homeowners deductible, but you have coverage for your loss.

Happy Holidays and be careful!
