Pennsylvania State Insurance: Thanksgiving Driving Safety

11/21/2011 12:00:00 AM

The week of Thanksgiving is one of the busiest driving weeks of the year. The Wednesday before the holiday is one of the worst drunk driving days of the year, and on Black Friday, the roads are full of people rushing to get the best deal on flat screen TVs. It’s important to check your Pennsylvania state insurance to make sure your car is covered if you are in an accident. Here are a few other tips to stay safe while behind the wheel this week:

  • Don’t drive drunk. Just don’t do it! If you’re going out the night before Thanksgiving, find a friend near the bar to stay with, or choose a designated driver. Never risk it – if you are even the slightest bit buzzed, call a friend or a cab to take you home.
  • Don’t drive drowsy. Many people don’t realize that driving while tired is just as dangerous as driving while intoxicated. This is especially important on Black Friday. If you’re planning on starting to shop at 5am, make sure you get enough sleep the night before.
  • Be alert. If you’re driving the night before Thanksgiving, be on the lookout for drunk drivers. On Black Friday, be careful of drowsy or aggressive drivers.
  • Stay focused. Distracted driving, much like drowsy and drunk driving, can be deadly. Avoid texting, talking on the phone, or fiddling with food or makeup. If you are driving with children, make sure they understand that you need to stay focused on the road to keep you all safe.

If you’re planning on driving at all this Thanksgiving week, do so safely! Follow these tips to keep you, your passengers, and your car safely. Check your Pennsylvania state insurance policy to make sure your car has adequate coverage in the event of an accident. Happy Thanksgiving!
