  • Lock your doors and take your keys. It may seem obvious, but nearly half of all car thefts were to cars that were left unlocked.
  • Don’t hide keys. Never leave a set of keys anywhere on or in your car. You may think you’ve hidden it well, but thieves know all the hiding places!
  • Choose your parking spot wisely. Look for a well-lit area or a garage with an attendant or gate. Never leave your car running unattended. We realize it’s cold out there and you want to warm it up, but a running car with keys in the ignition is a theft waiting to happen!
  • Lock items in your glove box. If you have a locking glove box, lock your GPS, cell chargers, iPods and other valuables in there. A thief can still get to them, but if he looks in your car and sees nothing of value, he may move on to the next car.
  • Make it difficult to get to your car. Remember: thieves don’t want your car or your belongings. They just want a specific make and model or a specific item. By making it difficult to access you car, they’ll move onto another vehicle that is easier to get to. Pull into your driveway and park another car behind it, park in your garage, or under a light on your street.

With a few precautions you’ll be able to keep your car and belongings safe. Don’t forget to talk to your Pennsylvania state insurance agency to find the right policy to cover everything you own!
